Programs

Rosegarden Kindergartenby Fatih Mosque, Brooklyn NY

A safe, nurturing and heartfelt learning environment for hearts and minds.

The years between four and seven are the ones in which a child learns fastest — and the ones in which habits, manners and attachments are set. Rosegarden exists so that those years are spent well.

The program is for boys and girls aged four to seven. It is not a substitute for school. It runs on Friday afternoons and Saturdays, alongside whatever schooling a child is already in, and it gives them the Arabic letters, the short surahs and the manners of the faith before formal schooling makes the days too full to start.

Children come away able to read Arabic letters, with a handful of surahs and duas by heart, and used to a classroom — sitting, listening, taking turns and putting things back. Parents tell us the last part is what they notice first.

What the children learn

Eight areas, taught side by side rather than one after another, so that a lesson in the letters and a lesson in manners can happen on the same afternoon.

Arabic & Qur’anic lettersRecognizing and writing the Arabic alphabet, then joining letters into words.
Qur’an recitationReading aloud with the teacher, a little at a time, until the sounds come naturally.
Duas & surah memorizationThe short surahs and the everyday supplications, learned by heart through repetition.
Adab & character buildingGreeting, sharing, asking permission, telling the truth — practiced, not just taught.
32 moral and Islamic lessonsA structured set of lessons covering the beliefs and duties a young child can grasp.
The life of the Prophet MuhammadStories from the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions, told at a child’s level.
Hadith & supplicationsShort hadith the children can remember, alongside the duas that go with daily acts.
Stories of the ProphetsFrom Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all), one story at a time.

Our building

Rosegarden has its own rooms — not a corner of the mosque borrowed for the afternoon. They were fitted out for small children: low furniture, soft flooring, and everything a four-year-old needs within reach.

ClassroomChild-height tables and chairs, a whiteboard, and shelves the children can reach themselves.
Activity roomCarpeted end to end, and used for free play, story time and group activities.
ReceptionWhere parents wait at drop-off and pick-up. The term’s notices go on the board.
Entrance hallShoes come off at the door, and every child has a place on the rack.
WashroomLow basins, step stools and a soft interlocking floor, sized for four- to seven-year-olds.
KitchenWhere snacks are prepared and where the teachers take their break.

Graduation

Every year ends with a ceremony in the main prayer hall. The children recite what they have learned in front of their families, and each one is called up by name for a certificate.

The whole group, before the ceremony begins.
Waiting their turn to recite.
